La Herradura, is a fantastic coastal community with plenty of relaxing beaches. Located in on the Costa Tropical and enclosed by the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean Sea gives La Herradura an almost tropical feel to the climate all year long. 

Rising up from the beach, the village of La Herradura presents a typical aspect of whitewashed buildings. Refreshingly Spanish, yet with plenty of amenities and a relaxed, informal atmosphere. 


The church, unlike in villages that were defensively designed, is quite low down the hill and fairly near the sea. In recent years the village has expanded eastwards along the shore to the foot of the Punta de la Mona, fronted by a procession of restaurants, bars, hostals and shops. 

5 minutes drive from Almunecar. La Herradura, together with Almunecar, form the tourist area of the Costa Tropical. This relatively unknown stretch of Spain's southern coastline belongs to Granada province in Andalucia. 

Along the 19 km of local coastline you can choose from a large variety of beaches and small coves, ranging from fine sand to shingle. Watersports are very popular and there are numerous businesses offering different types of courses and equipment hire. 

Divers will find some of the best underwater scenery here of anywhere along the southern coast. Due to its protected geography, the local area has a micro-climate that is unique to the country and for which it has been baptised the Costa Tropical. To be precise, the climate is not really tropical but subtropical, since there is none of the stifling humidity common to the tropics. Quite the opposite. Sea breezes fan the shoreline throughout most of the year, tempering the severe summer heat, and there is no rainy season. In fact, it sometimes doesn't rain for many months at a stretch. When it does, it can be torrential and often a year's supply of water will fall in a couple of weeks. But, on average, it only rains 20 days a year. Not a very good reason for bringing your umbrella. In wintertime, temperatures very rarely fall below 10°C, averaging an impressive 18°C throughout the low season. In summer, this average rises to about 25°C with midday temperatures often well into the 30's. Population: 30.000
